Riddle Me This, Batman…

Why the hell does it cost 3x to make a phone call to a U.K. landline than it does to one in India?!?!

Anyone?!

Bandwidth most likely. Your “land line” call is actually digitized, compressed, and sent fiber optically overseas. That’s why all overseas call costs have plummeted in the past 2 decades (in real terms of course).

What resides in India that requires a lot of cheap bandwidth? All those call centers… I haven’t checked but if my thesis holds, Philippines should be quite reasonable as well…

First off, it’s the UK mobile that’s 3 times the India rates.

Then, ask the question “why are there two rates to the UK” and then get the answer from there.

Outside of the US, most cellular networks charge the caller for calling a cellphone, not the owner of the cellphone. Ergo, if you were calling a UK cellphone, you would pay for the airtime. If you were calling a UK landline, it’s correspondingly less.

How do you know as a caller whether a number is a cellphone? Outside the US, mobile networks are identified by a prefix (think 800, or, in your case, 900 numbers :))
